Karongwe White Rhino orphan dies in wildlife rehab centre

It is with great sadness that we report that Floppy, the orphaned white rhino calf (Ceratotherium simum) that has been in the care of Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre since he was found wandering alone and injured on Karongwe Game Reserve in early June (see post on 24th June), has died.

It was very sudden and he had died within an hour of the staff and carers at the rehab centre becoming aware that there was a problem. An autopsy showed that the cause of death was a hemorrhaged lung, even though it also revealed a host of lesser internal conditions/ injuries that may have contributed to his death. Moholoholo Wildlife Rehab Centre has a long track record as the best of its kind in the area, well done to the volunteers and staff there for the comfort and care that they had provided to Floppy until his untimely death.
