Lowveld Coordinated Research Forum - Rhino symposium

On September 30th the staff of GVI Karongwe were able to attend the Lowveld Coordinated Research Forum (LOCORES) meeting, which coincided with the annual Sustainable Living Festival in the nearby town of Hoedspruit.  The focus of the meeting was on the grave issue of the poaching of Rhino (Ceratotherium simium and Diceros bicornis) and a number of leading authorities presented information on current resources and protective measures. In 2011 alone, 311 rhino had already been poached in South Africa by the end of September, and it is estimated that a staggering 419 will be gone by the end of the year. The meeting was followed by a brainstorming session to discuss how to approach this problem together as a region.

With White Rhinos being one of the focus species on Karongwe, we not only support but hope to work alongside as many outside organizations as possible to support this worthy cause.  The future of the Rhino is in all of our hands!
