The Daktari Delivery Derby

It’s finally happening! On May 30th, GVI Karongwe staff and volunteers will be pushing a 4x4 hilux pick-up truck 11km’s across gravel roads, up and down 5 monstrous hills, through a Big 5 reserve to raise funds for an incredibly worthy cause.

We’re not sure it’s even possible, but we are undertaking this challenge in support of the Daktari Outreach Program and will give it our best shot.

Practice One...

The mission of Daktari is to educate and inspire underprivileged children to care for their environment through the medium of a wildlife orphanage. Every Monday Daktari welcomes a new group of 8 local underprivileged children and 1 youth as a local volunteer for a week and gives them the opportunity to discover, learn and become passionate about wildlife, conservation and their heritage. They also supplement their school curriculum in English, maths, sciences, geography, life skills and social issues, with a 1:1 student to volunteer/teacher ratio.

Practice two... Note the exhaustion...
The Outreach program intends to engage with students in local schools, particularly those that have previously attended a week at Daktari Bush School, to assist and facilitate establishing Eco-clubs at and provide guidance for running environmental activities and educational programs in these eco-clubs. Activities such as litter clean-ups, educational bush-walks, day trips to learn about Eco-Tourism and wildlife sanctuaries will be organised along with assistance in achieving eco-school status, and much more.

Children have influence on their peers and elders. Through outreach and fun educational activities this project will instil desire to preserve the environment throughout the community. In time this will reduce pollution and poaching of wildlife in the area. This valuable experience will also open up opportunities and develop interest in youth to the great job opportunities available in eco tourism.
