Spotted Hyena removals at Karongwe

Karongwe’s spotted hyena clan (Crocuta crocuta) quickly settled in the south of the reserve after their initial release from the boma. That was back in 2001 and since then they have reproduced very successfully- too successfully in fact, for the reserve manager’s liking! The species is not easy to find buyers for, in fact many land owners would rather not have them on their properties because of their considerable prey needs, and reputation for being difficult to manage once they are established on a property. However, Karongwe management have recently been fortunate to have a request for seven spotted hyenas for a reserve close to Johannesburg. It was a hectic all night job last night but reserve manager Constant Hoogstad, the local vet, with help from some of the GVI crew have successfully darted and removed four sub-adults. They have arrived safe and sound at their new home. We will continue with phase two of the mission next week once the remaining hyenas become more relaxed.
