In too deep

During one of our usual evening drives searching for the animals, we had to cross the Makutsi river over Red Wall’s crossing – a particularly steep bank on one end and a shallow but sandy incline on the opposite end. Johan (our driver) yelled “hang on” as we descended into the river bed at nearly a 70 degree angle! Because of the soft sand, and the 4x4 that wasn’t engaged, we got stuck. Everyone got barefoot and searched for rocks and sticks to put under the tyres and then helped push. Johan was down in the wet sand digging out the tyres and the belly of the truck, intent on getting us out on our own accord. During this process Johan realized he forgot to engage the 4x4. After many tries of “Just keep pushing!” a game drive vehicle happened to pass by and got us out. What an awesome and unforgettable experience.
