Big Friendly Giants...

A big thank you to Greg Devine for all his work on updating GVI’s elephant (Loxodonta africana) database. Vehicles headed out on this morning’s drive equipped with a new photographic identikit for 18 of the known bull elephants on the reserve using their identifying features such as ear notches and tusk differences.

Since their release onto Venetia during the early nineties the elephant population has risen steadily. At the last count in September 2009 Venetia was known to have close to 100 elephants. Of this we estimate there to be at least three breeding herds, the rest of the population comprising lone males and bachelor groups.

Currently we are turning to focus more on determining the demographics of the elephant population on the reserve. With the help of the new identikits we hope to ID any bulls we see on drive, giving us valuable information about their home ranges and movements.
