Karongwe shut down update!!

Another eventful shutdown has come to an end and we now welcome our new volunteers to us here at GVI Karongwe. I’d like to start by welcoming some new members of staff: Andreas (the volunteer that never left..) has now joined the permanent team of research drivers, and Koen (our resident Dutchman) and Kaggie from the US, are our new scholars for the next 10 weeks. Oh and not forgetting Helen and Alex’s new Puppy ‘Six’ – she is an absolute cutey! So our new GVI team is looking good!
Good news and bad news regarding the wildlife – on the upside, the illusive Rhino (Ceratotherium simum) Jessica was seen!! And with a young calf! So good news for the Rhino (C. simum) population of Karongwe. On the downside, we have not had signal for our collared Leopard (Panthera pardus), Tilo, since 18th Sept. We are still teleming for her everyday but fear either the collar has stopped working or she has escaped the reserve.. only time will tell. Also the hope of some new arrivals within the next few weeks as we think our collared Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) Ketsweri is pregnant!
The peace and quiet around camp during shutdown always invites some animal antics.... sat on the veranda we saw someone walking through the bush with torchlight... ‘ who is walking through the bush at night’ we said... then we realised one of the sub-adult Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) had stolen our torch and was lighting its way through the bush. Finally they can see in the dark!
Animal antics aside, we are now hoping to extend our community day to 2 days a week with also a visit to a local orphanage. Great stuff GVI Karongwe!
