Hyena - Up close and Personal!!

It was 5.30am and Ann-Cathrin and I were sitting on the veranda reading our books by torchlight when we heard a noise in the kitchen. It was in fact a Spotted Hyena raiding our bio-bin and not another volunteer as we had thought! It had snuck right by us without us even noticing! Needless to say out hearts stared racing and we realised there were actually two of them just meters away and inside the house! We alerted the base intern - Matt - who "shooed" one away but the other one decided that the prospective prize of the bin was more enticing. Eventually, after repeated stern words and one last go at a bin bag, the visitors decided it was time to go and headed off into the bush. What a way to start the day!
