FINALLY A BLACK RHINO!

Finally a Black rhino (Diceros bicornis) sighting! There are an estimate of 4200 left in the wild, and we are lucky enough to have them on Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve. Despite their name Black rhino's are actually grey in colour, and can be distinguished from other species by their pointed, prehensile upper lips, used for foraging. It is this practise that give the animal its other popular name: the hook lipped rhino.

Rhinos are heavily poached for their horns, which are highly sought after in parts of the Middle and Far East. It is believed that powdered rhino horn has powerful medicinal properties, although it has never been proven.

Rhino poaching is kept to a minimum by patrolling the fences and reserve regularly and having a good anti poaching team.
